Welcome to Agnes Scott College! To help you prepare for your first session with a SUMMIT Advisor, we need some information on the academic skills you are bringing to Agnes Scott. Please read the instructions below to determine which assessments are relevant for you. The Math Skills Quiz is required for ALL NEW STUDENTS. If you experience difficulty please email summitadvising@agnesscott.edu or jdoanewing@agnesscott.edu for assistance.

Please take the surveys and tests that apply to you by June 1, 2025 to allow your advisor sufficient time to review your scores and prepare for your advising appointment.

We have also included a section of this page with information about scheduling your summer advising appointment and preparing--you will be receiving much of this information via email as well from your admissions counselor and later from your assigned SUMMIT Advisor. We're excited to get to know you and help you find your place here at Agnes Scott.

Math Skills Quiz

All new students, including transfer students, are required to take this quiz, even if they do not intend to pursue a math-intensive field of study. PLEASE USE CHROME TO TAKE THIS QUIZ. SAFARI CAUSES SOME PROBLEMS TO NOT DISPLAY CORRECTLY. This quiz helps you and your advisor make decisions about what classes to prioritize in your first semester and what kinds of academic resources and support might benefit you. We use this information to best understand you, not to reward or penalize you.

Language Placement Tests

We offer placement tests for Spanish, French, German, and Latin. If you have a background in any of these languages, take the test that corresponds with that language. The results of this placement test and the information you provide will allow the various language departments on campus to determine the starting class for which you are best suited. Don't despair--you can't "fail" the placement test!

Please note: Under the honor code, to which you are bound upon accepting Agnes Scott’s offer of admission, it is prohibited to consult grammar books or seek the help of outside individuals while working on this exam. Also, the exam must be completed in one attempt. Unfortunately, you cannot save your progress and finish it later, and you cannot change your answers once the exam is submitted.

You only need to complete placement tests for languages you have studied for at least one year:

Calculus Readiness Surveys

If you are interested in a math-intensive field, you should take the Calculus Readiness Survey and possibly the "Are You Ready for Calculus II" survey. Not everyone needs to take calculus at Agnes Scott. It is required for majors in Astrophysics, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Mathematics-Physics, Mathematics-Economics, and Physics. It is also required for the Dual Degree in Engineering Program with Georgia Tech and the Dual Degree in Computer Science Program with Emory University, as well as recommended for some health professions.

Please do NOT use a calculator for either test. Answering the questions without the aid of a calculator is part of the Agnes Scott College Honor Code. Also, each survey must be completed in one attempt and you have a 3-hour time limit. Unfortunately, you cannot save your progress and finish it later, and you cannot change your answers once the test is submitted.

Are You Ready for Calculus I?

The Calculus Readiness Survey is used to help you and your SUMMIT advisor decide if you are ready for Math 118: Calculus I, or whether you might benefit by first taking the course on Functions and Modeling (Math 117).

This placement survey is used to help you and your SUMMIT advisor decide if you are ready for Math 119: Calculus II, or whether you should first take Math 118, Calculus I. It assumes that you have taken a calculus course in high school in which you did well.

Performing Arts Placements & Auditions

Our Creative Arts department offers many ways for students who participated in the arts in high school to continue that pursuit at Agnes Scott College--some of you may choose to major or minor in the Arts, but others may just want a chance to continue to sing, dance, or perform, and you are welcome too! Review the information below about the different kinds of placement and audition information we might need and sign up as indicated below. If you are interested in theater, there will be opportunities to audition for productions on campus once the semester begins, whether or not you are in a theater course your first semester. There is nothing you need to do in the summer before you begin.

Make sure you talk to your SUMMIT Advisor about your interest in the arts, and they can help you make sure you get the information you need to follow up about auditions and placements.

Dance Placement

If you have danced before and are planning to take a dance class in the next 4 years, you should plan to attend the Dance Placement Class at 12:30 on Monday, August 18, during Legacy: New Student Orientation. Come dressed to dance, but no other preparation is required.

Music Theory Placement

The Music Theory Assessment is required for students who want to major or minor in Creative Arts: Music, or even those who might want to take academic music classes while at Agnes Scott. The Music Theory Assessment will take place during Legacy: New Student Orientation on Monday, August 18 at 1:15 pm. Check the Legacy: New Student Orientation schedule for the location. Majors and minors are required to complete courses in the music theory sequence–this assessment will help determine the starting level most appropriate for your background.

Ensemble Auditions

Calling all singers! Want to sing with our Collegiate Chorale? Sign up here for Chorale auditions during Legacy: New Student Orientation and get a chance to meet our Chorale director. You must sign up for Chorale auditions in advance.

If you play an instrument and would like information on auditioning for our orchestra or one of our other ensembles, please stop by the Creative Arts department table at the Academic Department Fair during Legacy: New Student Orientation.

Preparing For Your Advising Appointment

Be on the lookout for a welcome email from your SUMMIT Advisor (primary academic advisor) with information about scheduling a summer advising appointment and preparing to register for your courses. You will also be hearing from your SUMMIT Peer Advisor this summer, with information about preparing for and transitioning to Agnes Scott from a student perspective. More information about who your Peer Advisor is to come in that same welcome email from your SUMMIT Advisor.

How do I schedule my Advising Appointment?

Watch "How to Schedule a Summer Advising Appointment," for instructions about scheduling your academic advising appointment with your SUMMIT Advisor. However, please remember that you will not be able to schedule an appointment until you learn who your specific SUMMIT Advisor will be at the end of June! (Video)

What will we discuss during our Virtual Advising Session?

We will discuss your initial goals for the semester, and begin chatting about finding your purpose.
We will take a closer look at the SUMMIT curriculum including general education and major requirements.
We will build your fall schedule based on your academic interests and degree requirements. Most first-year students will register for 16 credits in their first semester.
